The RM of Piney consists of 12 communities with a total population of around 1,600 people.  The people in these friendly communities mostly speak English as a first language; however, French, German, Polish, and Ukrainian are also spoken here.  The principal industries in the area are agriculture and forestry.

Housing 

The housing in the RM of Piney consists of single-detached homes, semi-detached homes, and mobile (trailer) homes.  There are no apartment buildings in the vicinity.  Some of the communities have places to rent or places that are for sale.  These dwellings tend toward the single-detached and the semi-detached.

Employment

The RM of Piney has an unemployment rate of 9.0% This rate has remained steady since 1991.  The primary types of business in the area are logging, forestry, agriculture, and other related services (see table below for further information).

The majority of the people in the RM of Piney earn between $ 6,200 and @ 12,400 per year.  Approximately one third of the population earns between 15 and 30 thousand dollars per year.   With the low land costs and taxes, the residents live in financial stability despite the low yearly incomes.

Industry/Business

The RM of Piney shopping, business, and industrial sectors are an integral part of the community.  Numerous services exist in the area; they range from hand-crafted goods, groceries, general trade, banks, insurance, wood products, and many more.  There is potential for expansion in many areas.

This corner of Manitoba has many natural resources and large tracts of undeveloped land.  These tracts of land would serve as ideal locations for business or industrial purposes. An industrial park has been zoned and provides 3 phase power, access to the railroad, all weather road access, and natural gas.  Individual sites will sub-divided upon request.

Education

The area is serviced by two school boards- Seine River School Division and Borderland School Division.

Only two schools operate within the borders of the RM of Piney: a school servicing a local colony and Ross L. Gray School. R.L.G. is a kindergarden through grade 12 facility located in Sprague, MB.  (204-437-2175).  Some children in the area attend school in Vita (Borderland School Division) while others go to school in La Broquerie (Seine River School Division). 

For post secondary education, the residents travel out of the area to Winnipeg or Brandon to meet post secondary goals.
